Citizens as partners - a relational approach
Between the two public actors, on one side the local government, on the other side the Islamic “community” the main form of communication are on one hand policies trying to define, regulate and normalize a complex set of possible layers of interaction – policies which are subject to interpretation, application and implementation – while from the part of the “community” this process is met by an ongoing process of representation, articulation of ideas and formation of representative identities. The approach of this research proposes that in the complex and often ambiguous “negotiation” of the relationship between identity and citizenship, an important role is that of mediators, individuals or collective actors in charge of representation. This comparative research will be conducted in Rotterdam (The Netherlands), Leicester (United Kingdom) and Marseille (France).
